About Sikkim

Sikkim: Sikkim, a state of India with a total geographical area of 7096 sq km, extending approximately 114 km from North to South and 64 km from East to west. Sikkim is a part of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot.

Due to the geographical location, topography, elevation variation, and marked zonation of vegetation, Sikkim harbors high avifaunal diversity compared to its small geographical area. Sikkim lies at the convergence of the central and eastern Himalayas.

However, the state has often been considered a part of eastern Himalaya. It has a varied climate, topography, and altitudinal ranges within 7096 sq km area starting from 300 meters to 8586 meters. Having vast diversity of elevation zone and different vegetation types, Sikkim offers a home to diverse species of flora and fauna.

Sikkim being isolated and inaccessible in many parts often lags behind on research. The first bird survey was done by Dr. Salim Ali during 1962. After that, the birds of Sikkim remained unfocused ornithologically for about 40 years. Later some occasional sightings and small researches were carried out by few researchers and hence the total number of birds are said to be found in Sikkim is 574.
